Have You Read the All Iowa Reads 2009 Selection?

Sponsored by the Iowa Center for the Book, All Iowa Reads is "one state, one book" program. Read here to learn more about it.

The Ruthven Public Library is again participating in the All Iowa Reads program put on by the Iowa Center for the Book in 2010?  Established in 2003, The All Iowa Reads program was one of the first programs provided by the Iowa Center for the Book.

The purpose of All Iowa Reads is to encourage Iowans statewide to read and talk about a single title in the same year. Libraries and other local organizations are encouraged to sponsor discussions of the title.

The current year's selection, The Rope Walk by Carrie Brown, was called “highly recommended” by Library Journal in 2007, where the reviewer wrote, “Brown’s requisite word paintings of the details of childhood are tone-perfect and utterly irresistible.”  Still, the announcement was a surprise to librarians in attendance at the 2008 Iowa Library Association Conference where it was announced as Brown was virtually unknown in the state prior to the selection.

In The Rope Walk, Carrie Brown crafts a luminous story of a young girl's coming of age during a crucial summer in New England.

On her tenth birthday Alice meets two visitors to her quiet town: Theo, the African American grandson of her father's best friend, and Kenneth, an artist who has come home to convalesce. Theo forms an instant bond with Alice that will indelibly change them both. The pair in turn befriend Kenneth, and decide to build a “rope walk” through the woods for him, allowing to make his way through the outdoor world he has always loved. But their good intentions lead to surprising consequences, and Alice soon learns how different the world of children and adults really are.

Come to the library and check The Rope Walk out in regular print, large print or unabridged audio.  Also, here is a list of some past All Iowa Reads selections:
